This wedding cake was designed to reflect the interests and personalities of the bride and groom. They wanted their cake to be beautiful but also lighthearted. They keep chickens and it was the groom’s suggestion to include these on the cake.
The bottom tier was fruit cake, the middle chocolate and the top tier lemon madeira, all covered with cream sugarpaste. I hand painted the 27 chickens around the sides of the cakes. The green of the ribbon matched the colours worn by the wedding party and also became ‘grass’ for the chickens to walk on.
The figures on top of the cake are also made from icing and loosely modelled on the bride and groom in their wedding outfits. They didn’t actually wear their wellies on the day though! This is the first time I have modelled people for a cake.
